Do You Meet the Minimum Qualifications?
Education, age limits, and eligibility for aspiring pilots.
In our ultimate pilot roadmap, we covered the high-level steps to reaching the cockpit. But before you start looking at flight schools or studying aerodynamics, we need to talk about eligibility.
Aviation is a highly regulated industry. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has strict baseline requirements that every aspiring commercial pilot must meet. Today, we are breaking down exactly what those minimum qualifications are.
The PCM Rule (Education)
The foundation of pilot training is rooted in science and numbers. To be eligible for a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) in India:
- The Core Rule: You must have successfully passed your 10+2 board examinations.
- Mandatory Subjects: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory.
The Backup Plan (Commerce or Arts)
This is the most common concern we get at Aero Guide. If you didn't take science in high school, your aviation dream is NOT over. You can clear Physics and Mathematics through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
- Enroll as an "On-Demand Examination" student.
- Pass the Physics and Math exams.
- Combine the NIOS marksheet with your original 10+2 certificate.
Age Limits
You can start earlier than you might think. Most students begin training at 17 so they can receive their CPL right at 18.
- Student Pilot License (SPL): Minimum 16 years for ground classes, and 17 years to start flying.
- Commercial Pilot License (CPL): Minimum 18 years to be issued the license.
Language Proficiency
Aviation is global, and English is the universal language of the skies. You must pass an Aviation English Language Proficiency (RTR/AELP) test before earning your CPL.
